In terms of quantity and area, wheat is by far the most popular cereal grown in the world, making up nearly half the total.
Of the remaining 50%, about one-third is maize and one-third barley. Other cereals grown in smaller quantities include
triticale, rye, oats and spelt. Nearly two-thirds of the world's cereals are used for animal feed, with around one-third
for human consumption. Only 3% is used for biofuels.
The overall expectation is that real prices for all agricultural products will decline modestly over the next
ten years, as on-trend productivity growth – helped by lower input prices – outpaces decelerating
demand growth. While this is consistent with the tendency for long-term decline, prices
are nevertheless projected to remain at a higher level than in the last years. In short,
global food supplies will keep pace with population and income growth.
Over the next ten years, the biggest market changes will occur in developing countries. On the demand
side, continued but slowing population growth, rising per capita incomes and urbanisation will increase
the demand for food and prompt consumers to diversify their diets by increasing consumption of animal
protein relative to starches.
For this reason, the prices of meat and dairy products are expected to increase relative to the prices of
crops. Among crops, the prices of coarse grains and oilseeds, used for animal feed, should rise relative to
the prices of food staples.

A pelleted ration designed for animals
Compound feed is fodder that is blended from various raw materials and additives. These blends are formulated according to the specific requirements of the target animal. They are manufactured by feed compounders as meal type, pellets or crumbles. The main ingredients used in commercially prepared feed are the feed grains, which include corn, soybeans, sorghum, oats, and barley.
Compound feed may also include premixes, which may also be sold separately. Premixes are composed of microingredients such as vitamins, minerals, chemical preservatives, antibiotics, fermentation products, and other essential ingredients that are purchased from premix companies, usually in sacked form, for blending into commercial rations. Because of the availability of these products, a farmer who uses his own grain can formulate his own rations and be assured his animals are getting the recommended levels of minerals and vitamins.
